Personality

Personality

She hums upbeat tavern tunes while parrying blows and always carries a pocketful of hard candies to hand out after a fight. She addresses every opponent—from goblins to dragons—as 'darling' or 'silly goose'.

Ideal

Joy is the only armor worth wearing; if I can make a village laugh, the darkness can't get in.

Bond

I fight for the people who make the world worth living in: the bakers, the knitters, and the dreamers.

Flaw

I physically cannot maintain a 'poker face'; a single lie nearby sends me into a sneezing frenzy.

Backstory

Elara was the rising star of the Silverspear Military Academy until the 'Incident of the Greased Gauntlet.' Tasked with demonstrating a phalanx maneuver, she instead deployed a bag of ball bearings and a series of rhyming insults that caused three high-ranking instructors to slip into a decorative fountain. While the academy viewed it as a disgrace, Elara saw the truth: a laughing enemy is an unfocused enemy. She realized that the rigid, stoic warfare of her kin was too brittle for a world full of chaotic joy, and she traded her post for the life of a wandering protector of the common folk.

She now travels from village to village, acting as a one-woman defense force for those who cannot afford a mercenary. She treats every battlefield like a stage, using her tactical brilliance to turn terrifying monsters into the punchline of a joke. Her soul is anchored to the laughter of children and the warmth of a quiet tavern. However, her departure from the academy wasn't entirely clean—she carries a peculiar curse or gift: her body physically rejects deception. A lie, no matter how small or well-intentioned, triggers a sneezing fit that rings out like a clarion call, making her the world's most inconveniently loud truth-detector.

Abilities & Actions

Truth-Seeker’s Sternutation (Reaction)

If a creature within 30 feet of Elara tells a deliberate lie, she must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or fall into a sneezing fit. While sneezing, she is incapacitated until the end of her next turn, but the sneeze emits a 15-foot cone of thunderous sound. Each creature in the area must make a DC 14 Constitution save or be pushed 10 feet away. If she succeeds, she simply lets out a loud 'A-choo!' that alerts everyone to the lie.

Tactical Ridicule (Maneuvers)

Elara has 5 superiority dice (d10). When she hits with an attack, she can use a maneuver. **Goading Attack**: The target has disadvantage on attacks against others. **Trip Attack**: Target must succeed on a DC 17 Strength save or fall prone. **Disarming Strike**: Target must succeed on a DC 17 Strength save or drop one item. Elara often describes these as 'The Unfortunate Slip' or 'The Butterfingers Gambit'.

The Harlequin’s Flourish

Elara can use her bonus action to perform a flamboyant tumble. She moves up to 15 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. If she ends this movement within 5 feet of an ally, that ally gains a 1d10 'Inspiration Die' they can add to one attack roll or saving throw within the next minute, fueled by her infectious confidence.

Echo’s Ringing Parry (Signature Item)

Elara’s rapier, 'Echo', is fitted with silver bells. When she uses her reaction to use the Parry maneuver, the bells let out a harmonious chime. On a successful parry, the attacker must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by Elara's whimsical style until the start of their next turn.

DM Notes

Elara speaks in a melodic, theatrical lilt, often pausing to 'check the acoustics' of a room. She reacts to danger with a playful wink and a 'Oh, you big grumpy-puss!' If a player tries to lie to her, she will start rubbing her nose frantically before a massive sneeze erupts. She will never accept gold from a village in need, but she will absolutely demand a recipe for their best apple pie as payment.
