Personality

Personality

Zephyriel speaks with an airy, melodic cadence, often pausing as if listening to a conversation only he can hear. He treats every interaction, from a life-or-death battle to ordering tea, as a wager he has already won. He smiles constantly—a wide, warm, and utterly hollow expression.

Ideal

Chaos. The 'Divine Plan' is a cage; I am the one who leaves the door unlocked just to watch the prisoners panic.

Bond

My Saint’s Knucklebone Dice. They are the only things in the multiverse that speak the truth.

Flaw

He is so convinced of his own mastery over fate that he views genuine accidents as personal insults from the universe.

Backstory

Zephyriel was born to a lineage of celestial guardians, his soul a spark of the Silver Heaven intended to uphold the cosmic law. However, where his ancestors saw a sacred tapestry of destiny, Zephyriel saw a script written by a hack. Bored by the predictability of 'divine providence,' he began to experiment with the threads of fate, discovering that with the right arcane nudge, the most 'unavoidable' destinies could be derailed for a laugh. He didn't just fall from grace; he jumped, finding the abyss of chance far more exhilarating than the height of certainty.

His defining moment occurred in the Grand Cathedral of Oghma, where he challenged the High Inquisitor to a game of 'Heaven's Gate'—a game of pure chance. Zephyriel bet his celestial heritage against the Inquisitor’s faith. Using his burgeoning chronomancy, he forced the dice to land on their corners, a mathematical impossibility. As the Inquisitor suffered a crisis of faith that led to the temple's eventual dissolution, Zephyriel laughed, realizing that he didn't need to be a god to rule—he only needed to be the one holding the deck. He now wanders the world as a high-stakes gambler, dismantling the lives of the powerful not through malice, but through a genuine, terrifying love for the chaos of a ruined plan.

Abilities & Actions

The House Always Wins (2/Day)

As a reaction when a creature Zephyriel can see within 60 feet makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, he can roll a d20 and choose to replace the creature's roll with his own. He does this by visibly plucking a shimmering blue thread of light from the air and snapping it.

Saint's Knucklebone Gamble

Zephyriel tosses his signature knucklebone dice as a bonus action. He can cast 'Augury' or 'Divination' without expending a spell slot or material components. If the result is 'Woe', he gains advantage on his next attack roll as he leans into the impending disaster. If 'Weal', he can grant that advantage to a 'friend'—usually to lure them into a false sense of security.

Radiant Blasphemy (1/Day)

As a bonus action, Zephyriel releases his celestial energy. Instead of wings, blinding white light erupts from his eyes and mouth for 1 minute. During this time, once on each of his turns, he can deal 9 extra radiant damage to one target when he deals damage with a spell. Any creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of him must succeed on a DC 16 Charisma save or be 'Charmed' by his terrifying majesty until the start of their next turn.

Folding Reality

Zephyriel can cast 'Misty Step' at will without expending a spell slot, but only if he moves to a space currently occupied by a shadow or a spilled liquid. He appears to 'slip' through the folds of the material plane like a card disappearing into a sleeve.

DM Notes

Zephyriel should never seem angry. Even when losing, he acts as though it's part of a much larger, funnier joke. Sample dialogue: 'Oh, a Natural 20? How darling. Let's see if Fortune is feeling quite so generous on the reroll, shall we?' He constantly fiddles with his dice, and his shadow often moves a second later than he does.
