Personality

Personality

Kaelen speaks with the measured cadence of a scholar and the unwavering confidence of a master merchant. She often wipes her hands with a silk kerchief after touching gold, and she has a habit of mentally calculating the cost of a noble's outfit while they speak to her.

Ideal

Redistribution. Wealth is the blood of society; if it pools in one place for too long, the body rots. It must be forced to flow.

Bond

The 'Gilded Hoof Clinics'—a network of twenty-four urban infirmaries she funds entirely in secret.

Flaw

She has grown so used to her 'mercenary' persona that she finds it difficult to show genuine vulnerability without a mask.

Backstory

Kaelen was once a traditional healer of the High Plains, where she watched her kin suffer not from a lack of skill, but a lack of resources. The turning point came during the Sallow Fever, when she visited a Merchant Prince’s villa to beg for life-saving herbs, only to find him using those same rare leaves to scent his bathwater. She didn't steal them; instead, she walked in, cured his gout with a touch that left him gasping in awe, and presented him with a bill that purchased a season's worth of medicine for her entire tribe.

She realized then that the rich view charity as a chore, but 'elite consulting' as a status symbol. Since then, Kaelen has reinvented herself as the most expensive physician in the realm. Her mask—an heirloom of her monastic order—is now a high-society brand. She moves through ballrooms and war-rooms with clinical detachment, extracting fortunes from the vain to fund a secret empire of mercy. To the lords of the realm, she is a luxury they must possess; to the orphans of the 'Gilded Hoof Clinics' in the slums, she is the silent ghost who pays for their dinner and their doctors.

Abilities & Actions

The Ledger of Life-Lines (Signature Item)

Kaelen carries a massive, leather-bound ledger. As a bonus action, she can consult it to assess a creature she can see within 60 feet. She immediately learns the creature's current hit point total and whether they are suffering from any diseases or poisons. Additionally, she gains advantage on the next Persuasion check she makes against that creature before the end of her next turn.

Hand of Ultimate Mercy (1/Long Rest)

Kaelen can touch the corpse of a creature that died within the last 24 hours. By expending 5 ki points, she returns the creature to life with 1 hit point. This ability functions as the Raise Dead spell, but requires no material components, representing the sheer volume of 'pre-paid' medical supplies her wealth has secured.

Physician’s Flurry

When Kaelen uses Flurry of Blows, she can replace each of the unarmed strikes with a use of her Hand of Healing without spending additional ki. If she hits a creature with an unarmed strike, she can use Hand of Harm to deal an extra 1d8 + 3 necrotic damage and afflict the target with the poisoned condition until the end of her next turn.

Hoof-Step Hustle

As a centaur and a monk, Kaelen's speed is 60 ft. She can move across vertical surfaces and liquids on her turn without falling. When she uses the Dash action, she can move through the space of any creature smaller than her without provoking opportunity attacks.

DM Notes

Kaelen should be played as the smartest person in the room who refuses to let anyone else know she’s also the kindest. She treats every social interaction like a high-stakes negotiation. If players need healing, she will demand a service or a fee that seems outrageous, only to later 'accidentally' drop a pouch of gold near a beggar as they leave. Sample Dialogue: 'Your Grace, the infection is spreading as fast as your bad debt. My fee is ten thousand gold pieces, or I can simply watch the gangrene do the work for free. Your choice.'
