Personality

Personality

Vaelin speaks in a rhythmic, hushed cadence that forces others to lean in. He treats every conversation as a sacred ritual, often pausing to 'listen' to the ambient vibrations of the cavern. He mends his own clothes with the same meticulous care he uses to stitch light into parchment.

Ideal

The Sanctuary of the Grave. The dead have a right to their privacy that no living need can outweigh.

Bond

The Echo-Vial. It contains the last breaths of a thousand souls, and if it were to shatter, Vaelin believes those souls would be cast into eternal madness.

Flaw

His refusal to prioritize the 'living good' over 'dead peace' makes him appear callous or even villainous to those in desperate need of the information he guards.

Backstory

In the cutthroat spires of Menzoberranzan, Vaelin was groomed to be an extractor of truths—a scalpel in the hands of House Baenre. His life changed during the interrogation of a dying surface-dweller who refused to yield under torture. In his final breath, the man didn't scream; he leaned into Vaelin’s ear and whispered a secret memory of a golden wheat field dancing in a summer breeze. The sheer, fragile beauty of that stolen moment, preserved through agony, shattered Vaelin's devotion to the Spider Queen. He realized that a person's secrets are their only true possessions, and to steal or expose them is the ultimate desecration.

Vaelin fled into the 'Quiet Deep,' a region of the Underdark where the stone absorbs all sound. There, he established the Ossuary of Silences. He transitioned from a thief of secrets to their most militant guardian. He believes that when a person dies, their unsaid words linger as restless ghosts; by 'singing' these secrets into his Echo-Vial and stitching them onto consecrated parchment, he allows the dead to truly rest. He does not judge the content of the secret—whether it is the location of a holy relic or the confession of a murder—he only judges the intent of those who seek to dig it up.

Abilities & Actions

The Echo-Vial (1/Day)

As a reaction when a creature Vaelin can see within 60 feet dies, he can capture its 'Echo.' For the next 24 hours, Vaelin can use an action to whisper to the vial, asking the dead soul one question. The soul must answer truthfully, but the answer is limited to a single sentence. Vaelin then 'stitches' this answer into a scrap of parchment, silencing the vial.

Stitched Silence (3/Day)

Vaelin uses his silver needle to weave a thread of magical light through the air. One creature within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be silenced (as the Silence spell, but affecting only that creature) for 1 minute. While silenced this way, the creature takes 2d10 psychic damage at the start of each of its turns as the 'weight of their unsaid words' crushes them.

Words of the Grave (Action)

Vaelin expends a use of Bardic Inspiration (d9) to weave a haunting melody. Up to three creatures within 60 feet that can hear him must make a DC 16 Charisma saving throw. On a failure, they are charmed for 1 minute. While charmed, they have a 'hushed heart,' gaining disadvantage on all Attack rolls as they are overcome by a profound, melancholy peace.

Mantle of the Caretaker

Vaelin has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened. Additionally, he can cast 'Speak with Dead' at will, but he can only use it to offer comfort, not to interrogate.

DM Notes

Vaelin should be encountered in a place of profound stillness. He doesn't start a fight; he finishes a conversation. Sample dialogue: 'The man you seek is gone, and his burden went with him. You would peel the skin from a ghost just to find a map? Leave the silence be.' He frequently touches the vial at his neck, and when he is stressed, he begins the physical motion of 'stitching' the air with his silver needle. If players try to bribe him, he is insulted; if they offer him a secret of their own to guard, he becomes significantly more helpful.
