Personality

Personality

Pips speaks in rapid-fire bursts, often interrupting herself to apologize to a 'sad-looking' rusted nail. She hums industrial melodies and has a habit of tucking interesting pebbles into her copper-wired braids.

Ideal

Potential. Everything and everyone has a hidden song inside them; they just need someone to find the right key.

Bond

The 'Gutter-Gurdy,' her hand-cranked instrument made of theater scrap. It's the only thing that hears the same music she does.

Flaw

She will dive into a literal sewer or a high-security vault if she spots a piece of 'high-quality junk' she needs.

Backstory

Pips was born into a circle of Forest Gnomes who prided themselves on their harmony with nature, yet she found the 'wisdom' of squirrels to be dreadfully repetitive. While her cousins were busy listening to the rustle of leaves, Pips was mesmerized by the rhythmic clanking of a nearby mining settlement. She realized early on that the things people threw away—broken gears, shattered glass, and rusted wire—weren't dead; they were simply waiting for a new song to wake them up. She left the green canopy for the gray cobblestones of the city, trading her wooden flute for a 'Gutter-Gurdy' she built from a discarded wine barrel and clockwork internals.

Her life changed the night she found the 'Star of the Sewer,' a massive, shattered crystal chandelier dumped behind the Grand Opera House. As she hummed a melody to the shards, they didn't just vibrate; they pulsed with a golden light, briefly forming a constellation on the damp alley floor. Since that night, Pips has been a woman possessed, scouring the city's refuse for 'latent magic.' She believes the world is becoming 'stuffy and stagnant,' and only by reanimating the forgotten can she bring a true, chaotic beauty back to the streets. She is currently saving every copper for 'The Grand Awakening,' a ritual requiring enough platinum dust to make the city's central landfill stand up and dance.

Abilities & Actions

Whispers to the Forgotten (Passive)

Pips has Advantage on Investigation checks made to find hidden items or magical properties within 'trash' or debris. She treats non-magical objects as if they have a simple personality, often gaining insight into their history through a brief, eccentric conversation.

Mote of Potential: Junk Spark (5/Long Rest)

When Pips uses Bardic Inspiration, a shimmering mote of scrap metal orbits the creature. If the creature rolls the die for an Ability Check, the mote sparks; they can roll the Inspiration die twice and take the higher result. If used for an Attack Roll, the mote explodes in a harmless but distracting glitter-burst, dealing 2d6 thunder damage to the target.

Dancing Trash Ballet (1/Long Rest)

As an action, Pips cranks her Gutter-Gurdy to target a Large or smaller non-magical object within 30 feet. The object sprouts spindly mechanical legs and becomes a Dancing Item (CR 2) for 1 hour. It is friendly to Pips and her allies, taking its turn immediately after hers. It can use its 'Irresistible Dance' to force a creature to dance along with it.

Gutter-Gurdy Crescendo (Bonus Action)

Pips plays a frantic riff. One creature within 60 feet that has her Bardic Inspiration can use their reaction to move up to half their speed without provoking opportunity attacks, as 'ghostly gears' appear beneath their feet to propel them.

DM Notes

Pips should be played with high energy and a genuine, infectious love for garbage. She doesn't see herself as poor; she sees everyone else as blind to the wealth in their gutters. Sample Dialogue: 'Oh, hush now, little hinge! Don't you cry. With a bit of emerald dust and a high C-sharp, we’ll have you singing like a nightingale!' She reacts to conflict by trying to 'fix' the enemy's gear rather than hurting them.
