Personality

Personality

Saelah is terrifyingly punctual, often arriving at a meeting exactly as the clock strikes the hour. She speaks with the practiced cadence of a high-society diplomat, punctuated by a shark-like grin that never reaches her eyes.

Ideal

Efficiency. Morality is a tax that slows down the accumulation of wealth and power.

Bond

The Shaded Ledger. Her organization is her magnum opus, and she will dismantle any city that threatens its profitability.

Flaw

She cannot resist showing off her superiority; she often leaves a gold coin on the pillows of those she has outsmarted just to prove she could have killed them.

Backstory

While her peers in the Autumnal Canopy spent centuries mastering the art of listening to the wind, Saelah Vaelen was busy calculating its market value. Born into a lineage of ascetic shadow-dancers, she found the monastic vows of poverty to be a personal insult. To Saelah, the ability to walk through walls and vanish into smoke wasn't a path to enlightenment; it was the ultimate skeleton key. She spent her youth memorizing the rhythm of the monastery's breathing just so she could slip out unnoticed, eventually making off with the Grandmaster’s ceremonial jade collection before her first century was even finished.

She transformed the sacred shadow arts into a corporate empire known as 'The Shaded Ledger.' Under her leadership, the Ledger doesn't just steal; they facilitate 'aggressive restructuring' for the desperate and the greedy. Saelah treats the weave of shadow as a high-end utility, using her ancestral gifts to bypass the inconveniences of physical security. She has become the most sought-after liquidator in the Tri-Cities, a woman who views a high-security vault not as a challenge, but as a poorly managed asset waiting for her personal touch. Her arrival is always preceded by a perfectly timed letter, and her departure is marked only by the silent disappearance of anything worth holding.

Abilities & Actions

Punctual Execution (Passive)

Saelah has advantage on initiative rolls. On her first turn in combat, her movement speed increases by 20 feet, and she deals an extra 2d10 force damage the first time she hits a creature with an unarmed strike or monk weapon.

Luxury Extraction (Shadow Step)

As a bonus action, Saelah can teleport up to 60 feet from one area of dim light or darkness to another. After she does so, she has advantage on the first melee attack she makes before the end of her turn. If this attack hits, the target must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or be blinded by swirling shadow-stuff until the end of its next turn.

Hostile Takeover (Stunning Strike)

When Saelah hits with a melee weapon attack, she can spend 1 Ki point to attempt a Hostile Takeover. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of Saelah's next turn. If the target is stunned, Saelah may use a reaction to immediately attempt a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check to disarm the target of one item they are holding.

The Ledger's Toll (Signature Item: Sapphire Wine Glass)

While holding her signature glass of sapphire wine, Saelah can cast 'Silence' or 'Pass Without Trace' without expending Ki points (3/day). Additionally, when she stands in darkness, she can use her reaction to add +4 to her AC against one attack that would hit her, as the shadows themselves rise to deflect the blow.

DM Notes

Saelah should never sound angry. Her threats are delivered as business propositions. Sample dialogue: 'I find your security measures charming, Lord Hallowell. Truly. It’s a shame they’re so... deductible.' She constantly flips a gold coin between her knuckles or checks a small, ornate pocket watch. If the players offer her a higher profit margin than her current employer, she will flip her allegiance mid-combat without a shred of hesitation.
