Personality

Personality

She constantly leans into people's personal space to sniff their collars, narrating their recent meals or emotional states with alarming accuracy. She speaks in a rapid-fire staccato, her hands perpetually stained with iridescent oils and soot.

Ideal

Sensory Liberation. 'Life is a banquet of atoms; it is a crime to only taste the bread.'

Bond

Smidge, her drake companion, whose shifting scale colors act as her most reliable pH indicator and emotional barometer.

Flaw

She has absolutely no sense of physical danger if a rare scent is at stake; she once followed a 'spectacularly musky' trail straight into a hibernating owlbear's den without a second thought.

Backstory

Vespera was born into a clan of celebrated copper dragonborn metalsmiths, but while her kin obsessed over the ring of a hammer on an anvil, she was captivated by the smell of the forge—the sharp, metallic tang of molten bronze and the charcoal's biting smoke. She realized early on that the world was writing a secret history in the air, a story that most people were too 'nose-blind' to read. While her peers were refining blades, Vespera was distilling the scent of 'A Tuesday Morning after Rain' and 'The Sudden Realization of a Forgotten Lie.'

Her obsession led her to create the Scent-Zither, a massive, pipe-filled instrument that translates olfactory data into atmospheric phenomena. She travels from city to city, setting up her brass scaffolding in public squares to perform 'Scent-Symphonies' that can make an entire crowd weep with nostalgia or dance with sudden, unearned joy. She is accompanied by Smidge, a miniature drake she rescued from a failing menagerie, who has since become her primary test subject and living incense burner. Vespera doesn't care for gold or fame; she is a pioneer on the frontier of the senses, chasing the impossible aroma of a star falling into the sea.

Abilities & Actions

The Vesper Glass (1/Long Rest)

Vespera activates her signature monocle. For 1 hour, she gains truesight out to 30 feet, but only for the purpose of seeing scents. She can see 'scent-trails' left by creatures up to 24 hours ago and can perfectly identify any liquid or gas by its visual 'color-signature' through the lens.

Scent-Zither Symphony (Action, Recharge 5–6)

Vespera adjusts the valves on her brass apparatus (or a portable version). She releases a 20-foot radius cloud of prismatic vapor centered on herself. Roll a d4: 1. **Lavender Peace:** Creatures must succeed on a DC 15 WIS save or be Charmed until the end of her next turn; 2. **Peppermint Pep:** Allies gain 2d6 temporary HP; 3. **Sulfuric Stink:** Creatures must succeed on a DC 15 CON save or be Poisoned for 1 minute; 4. **Citrus Clarity:** Allies gain Advantage on their next attack roll.

Smidge’s Bubbling Haze (Bonus Action)

Vespera commands Smidge to blow a bubble of concentrated essence at a point within 30 feet. The bubble pops, releasing a 5-foot-radius puff of smoke. Any creature in the area must succeed on a DC 15 DEX save or be outlined in glittering, scent-heavy glitter (as per the Faerie Fire spell) until the end of Vespera's next turn.

DM Notes

Vespera should be played with manic, high-energy enthusiasm. She doesn't walk; she flits. Sample Dialogue: 'Oh! Do you smell that? Top notes of wet limestone, a heart of anxiety, and... is that nutmeg? You’ve been in a bakery recently, but you were worried about the price of flour! Magnificent!' When she is interrupted, she doesn't get angry; she simply assumes the person is 'clogged' and offers them a pungent smelling salt that causes 1 point of psychic damage but clears any 'sinus-based stupidity.'
