Personality

Personality

She hums like a simmering tea kettle when she's thinking and smells perpetually of eucalyptus and sea salt. She has a habit of shouting 'Huzzah!' at squirrels, genuinely believing her vocal encouragement prevents the sun from losing its orbit.

Ideal

Transformation. Nothing should stay frozen or stagnant; life is meant to boil, bubble, and rise.

Bond

The Vapor-Ocarina, a gift from a blind glassblower who told her she sounded like 'the morning fog feels.'

Flaw

She often forgets that 'normal' people find 200-degree steam painful rather than 'refreshing.'

Backstory

Born in the crushing, lightless depths of an oceanic trench, Marina was destined to be a sentinel of the silent dark. That destiny evaporated the moment a sun-bleached magnifying lens from a shipwreck drifted into her hands. When she angled it toward a thermal vent, she watched a single bubble of water transform into a soaring bead of air. To her, it wasn't physics; it was liberation. She realized then that the sun was not an enemy to her kind, but a divine alchemist that turned the heavy, stagnant weight of the deep into the dancing freedom of the clouds.

She abandoned the Marid courts for the surface world, trading the 'perfect silence' of the abyss for the chaotic warmth of the noonday sun. Her pilgrimage led her to the Temple of the Glistening Wave, where she was eventually asked to leave after she rigged the ceremonial fonts with heating runes, claiming the initiates deserved a 'properly invigorating steam' rather than a cold splash. Now, she wanders the trade routes with her Vapor-Ocarina, selling rare bath salts and preaching the gospel of the Great Boil—the belief that all souls are just water waiting for enough warmth to finally take flight.

Abilities & Actions

Vapor-Ocarina: Soothing Mist (3/Day)

As an action, Marina plays a lilting tune on her glass ocarina. A 20-foot radius of warm, lavender-scented steam spreads from her. Each creature of her choice in the area regains 2d6 + 4 hit points and has advantage on saving throws against being frightened until the end of her next turn.

Flash-Boil Strike

When Marina hits a creature with a melee attack, she can expend a spell slot to deal an extra 2d8 fire damage as the moisture in the air around her weapon instantaneously turns to scalding steam. If the target is a creature made of water (like a Water Elemental), the damage increases to 3d8.

Huzzah of the Sun-Guard (Reaction)

When a creature Marina can see within 30 feet makes an attack roll or a saving throw, she can shout a thunderous 'Huzzah!' to bolster their spirit. The creature adds 1d4 to the roll. She insists this keeps the cosmic balance of the sun intact.

Solar Effervescence

Marina has resistance to fire damage. Additionally, while in direct sunlight, her skin constantly emits a light mist, granting her half-cover against ranged attacks as the air around her shimmers and refracts.

DM Notes

Marina speaks with a bubbly, rapid-fire cadence, often interrupting herself to marvel at a warm breeze. She gestures with her hands as if she's shaping clouds. If the party is stressed, she will insist they stop immediately for a 'ritual soaking.' She reacts with genuine, heartbroken confusion if someone is mean to a squirrel.
