Personality

Personality

He speaks in hushed, melancholic croaks, often pausing as if listening to an unseen conversation. He flinches subtly at sudden loud noises, a sign of his constant aural torment. Despite his species' inherent hostility, he approaches the living with cautious empathy, but his eyes constantly scan for signs of spiritual unrest, making him seem aloof.

Ideal

Peace. Not merely the absence of conflict, but the profound silence that comes when all things are laid to rest, and all sorrow finds its end.

Bond

The memory of his lost tribe, whose spectral whispers are a constant reminder of his failure and his purpose. He is bound to the unquiet dead, wherever they may be.

Flaw

He is perpetually exhausted by the psychic strain of the 'Whispering Blight,' sometimes struggling to discern reality from the spectral echoes, which can lead him to misinterpret motives or become momentarily unresponsive.

Backstory

K'rrkk, known to many as 'Chirp-Chirp' for the incessant, soft croaking that seems to emanate from him, is an anomaly among his kind. Grungs, typically tribal and territorial, rarely stray from their malicious ways, yet K'rrkk walked a different path from the moment he drew his first breath. His life cracked open during the 'Whispering Blight', a devastating massacre that wiped out his entire marsh tribe. He, a mere tadpole then, miraculously survived, but was left with a horrifying legacy: the ceaseless, spectral whispers of his kin, forever crying out from the ethereal plane.

This cacophony, a constant torment of anguish and confusion, transformed him. He didn't hear a god's call, but the collective wail of the unquiet dead. Driven by an overwhelming need for silence and peace, both for the lost and for his own tortured mind, K'rrkk dedicated himself to the Grave Domain. He channels his potent Grung poisons not for subjugation or harm, but for sanctification, believing his touch can soothe restless spirits or mark a corpse for eternal peace. He is a protector of the veil, a lonely guardian forever listening to the echoes of what was, striving to ensure no other soul endures the limbo he inadvertently experiences every waking moment.

Abilities & Actions

Whispering Venom (Reimagined Grung Poisonous Skin)

Chirp-Chirp's vibrant green skin carries a unique, dual-natured venom. When a creature touches Chirp-Chirp or hits him with a melee attack while within 5 feet of him, it must make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the creature is poisoned for 1 minute. As a bonus action, Chirp-Chirp can also touch a living creature within reach. The target makes a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target is charmed by Chirp-Chirp for 1 minute, their mind momentarily soothed by the gentle echoes of forgotten spirits, making them unwilling to harm him. On a successful save, they are immune to this charmed effect for 24 hours. Alternatively, if he touches a dead creature, he grants it the effects of the *gentle repose* spell for 24 hours.

Staff of the Silent Vigil (1/Short or Long Rest)

Chirp-Chirp's gnarled staff, woven from dark marsh reeds and polished bones, pulses with an ethereal, cold blue light. As an action, he can slam the staff into the ground, emitting a wave of calming energy. Each hostile creature within 15 feet of him must make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 4d6 psychic damage and is deafened until the end of its next turn as the whispers of the lost overwhelm its senses. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and is not deafened.

Echoes of the Unrest (Passive/Reaction)

The constant cacophony of spectral whispers grants Chirp-Chirp heightened awareness of the boundary between life and death. He has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks to detect invisible creatures, particularly incorporeal undead. When an undead creature attempts to possess, charm, or frighten a creature within 30 feet of Chirp-Chirp, he can use his reaction to impose disadvantage on the undead creature's saving throw or ability check.

Sentinel at Death's Door

Chirp-Chirp's vigilance extends to protecting the living from the brink. When a creature within 30 feet of him suffers a critical hit, he can use his reaction to turn that hit into a normal hit. Any effects triggered by a critical hit are canceled.

DM Notes

K'rrkk carries himself with an air of profound weariness, yet his movements are agile, typical of a Grung. His voice is a low, guttural croak, often trailing off as if he's forgotten you're there.

**Sample Dialogue:** "Sssilence... that is the true gift. Not for the living, but for the lost... Do you hear them?" He might tilt his head, eyes widening slightly, as if pinpointing a distant, unheard wail.

**Signature Gesture:** A slight shiver and a twitch of his throat-sac whenever a restless spirit draws near or a particularly strong whisper comes to him. He often taps his staff rhythmically, a habit to focus his mind against the constant spiritual noise.

**Reaction Patterns:** Cautious and observant, he prefers to avoid direct confrontation unless the unquiet dead are disturbed or threatened. He becomes fiercely protective of burial sites, ancient ruins, or any place where the veil between worlds is thin. He is easily distracted by the faint cries of the dead, momentarily zoning out from the present conversation.

**Deal-Breaker:** Disrespecting the dead, disturbing hallowed grounds, or, most profoundly, attempting to animate or control undead will incur his immediate and unwavering wrath. He views such acts as the ultimate desecration of the peace he so desperately seeks.
