Personality

Personality

Ferrum speaks in a rhythmic, sing-song cadence and often taps out beats on his stone thighs. He treats every movement, from pouring tea to parrying a blade, as a choreographed step in a grand ballroom dance.

Ideal

The Laws of Play. A toy must never break, a promise must never be forgotten, and a duel must never be won through trickery.

Bond

I carry the unfinished Clockwork Nightingale of my Master; it is the only thing that proves I am more than just a pile of rocks.

Flaw

I am paralyzed by the fear that I am an imposter, a 'silly stone man' pretending to be an artist.

Backstory

Ferrum was born to a family of stoic stonemasons who expected him to be as immovable as the mountains. Instead, he found rhythm in the strike of the chisel and melody in the grinding of gears. He was apprenticed to Master Pipsqueak, a legendary gnomish toymaker who taught Ferrum that true strength isn't in holding still, but in knowing exactly how to move. Pipsqueak nicknamed him 'Rock-Candy'—hard and jagged on the exterior, but possessing a crystalline sweetness that fueled his every creation.

The defining moment of Ferrum's life came when a group of debt collectors stormed the workshop, threatening to smash the Master's life's work. Ferrum didn't just fight them; he danced. He used a yardstick and a heavy gear-lathe to lead the thugs in a humiliating, rhythmic waltz out the front door. When Master Pipsqueak passed away, he left behind the 'Nightingale of the Eternal Dawn'—a clockwork masterpiece missing its heart-spring. Ferrum now travels the world, seeking the rare materials needed to finish the bird, convinced that he is merely a clumsy stone oaf playing at being a genius, unaware that his 'accidental' heroics have already made him a folk hero to every child in the district.

Abilities & Actions

Nightingale's Cadence (3/Day)

As a bonus action, Ferrum winds the unfinished clockwork bird in his hand. The bird emits a discordant but rhythmic clicking. For the next minute, Ferrum's movement does not provoke opportunity attacks, and he can use his Sneak Attack even if he doesn't have advantage on the attack roll, provided no other creatures are within 5 feet of him.

Laws of Fair Play (Reaction)

When a creature Ferrum can see hits him with a melee attack, he can use his reaction to roll a d6 and add it to his AC for that attack, potentially causing it to miss. He can only use this ability if he is wielding a melee weapon and is not wearing heavy armor or using a shield.

Panache

As an action, Ferrum can make a Charisma (Persuasion) check contested by a creature's Wisdom (Insight) check. If he succeeds and the creature is hostile, it has disadvantage on attack rolls against targets other than Ferrum and cannot make opportunity attacks against targets other than Ferrum for 1 minute. If the creature is not hostile, it is charmed by him for 1 minute.

Earthen Grace

Despite his heavy shale skin, Ferrum ignores difficult terrain composed of earth or stone. Additionally, he can cast Pass Without Trace once per long rest (Earth Genasi trait), which he fluffily describes as 'stepping between the beats of the world'.

DM Notes

Ferrum should be played with high energy and a touch of insecurity. He often apologizes for 'taking up too much space' even while performing a backflip.

Sample Dialogue: 'A-one, and a-two, and a-mind your chin, sir! This waltz requires a certain... perpendicularity!'

Signature Gesture: Straightening his vibrant ochre doublet and nervously checking the tension on the clockwork bird's wings.

Reaction Pattern: He will never strike a prone or disarmed opponent, instead offering them a hand up and a critique on their footwork.
