Personality

Personality

Speaks in a soft, melodic lilt and maintains eye contact for a beat too long with a gentle smile. He hums alongside the psionic 'white noise' in his head and often pets the air as if comforting an invisible beast.

Ideal

Radical Empathy. Every conflict is simply a failure to communicate across the vibrations of the soul.

Bond

His obsidian tuning fork, which he uses to find the 'fundamental frequency' of any environment or creature.

Flaw

Vaelin is dangerously optimistic. He will describe a Red Dragon as 'a particularly passionate heater' and refuse to see the threat until his silks are literally smoldering.

Backstory

Vaelin Thann was once a promising student of the Academy of Sorcery in Menzoberranzan, but the subterranean city’s obsession with cruelty felt like a high-pitched ringing in his ears. When the 'whispers from beyond' began to manifest in his mind, most Drow would have feared madness or execution. Vaelin, however, simply found the cosmic entities to be fascinatingly misunderstood. He realized that the shrieking madness of the Far Realm was remarkably similar to a classroom of unruly toddlers; they weren't evil, they were simply lacking a proper curriculum.

He walked out of the Underdark on a Tuesday, not fleeing in terror, but simply looking for a 'quiet place to think.' Upon reaching the surface, the blinding sun didn't burn him—it felt like a warm embrace. Vaelin now travels the world as a self-appointed circuit judge and mediator. He views every bandit raid or monster attack as a 'teachable moment' regarding emotional regulation. While his psychic connection to the void has left him unable to tell the difference between a scenic sunset and a forest fire, his genuine warmth is so disarming that even the most hardened mercenaries find themselves putting down their swords to discuss their childhood traumas.

Abilities & Actions

The Harmonizing Fork (3/Day)

Vaelin strikes his obsidian tuning fork against a surface. He can cast the 'Calm Emotions' spell (Save DC 15) without using a spell slot or providing somatic/verbal components. Creatures who fail the save are not just calmed; they feel an overwhelming sense of being heard and understood by the universe.

Classroom Management (Telepathic)

As a bonus action, Vaelin can touch the mind of a creature within 30 feet. Instead of standard communication, he projects a wave of paternal patience. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on their next attack roll as they become momentarily distracted by the soothing mental image of a quiet, sunlit library.

Confidently Misguided

Vaelin is immune to the Frightened condition. However, he has disadvantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks to determine if a creature is hostile, as he assumes all aggression is merely a 'loud cry for a snack or a nap.'

Psionic Sorcery

When Vaelin casts a sorcery spell of 1st level or higher, he can spend a number of sorcery points equal to the spell's level to cast it without any verbal, somatic, or material components (unless consumed).

DM Notes

Sample Dialogue: 'Oh, don't mind the screaming voices from the void, dear friend. They're just upset because they haven't learned their vowels yet. Now, tell me, does your greataxe represent a need for boundaries you didn't receive as a child?'

Signature Gesture: He holds his tuning fork to his ear and closes his eyes, nodding slowly as if listening to a distant, pleasant symphony that no one else can hear.

Reaction: If attacked, Vaelin doesn't get angry; he looks disappointed, like a teacher watching a bright student fail a simple quiz. He will use 'Shield' or 'Silvery Barbs' while offering encouraging words on how to improve their form.
