Personality

Personality

Speaks in a melodic, rhythmic whisper that evokes the rustling of leaves. They maintain a terrifying professional focus, often narrating their kills as if they are performing routine arboriculture.

Ideal

Balance. The city is a living organism; for the whole to thrive, the diseased parts must be excised without emotion.

Bond

A small, dried sunflower tied with a child's ribbon—a reminder of the one life they couldn't save from the city's 'weeds.'

Flaw

They no longer see sentient beings as people, only as biological components of an urban ecosystem.

Backstory

Vaelin was once the pride of the Oakhaven City Watch, a towering figure of justice who could track a thief through a crowded market by the scent of pine needles on their boots. For decades, they believed the city was a masterpiece of civilization, a great grove where every soul had a place. That belief shattered during the 'Great Thaw' of 412, when Vaelin uncovered evidence that the High Magistrate was intentionally redirecting grain shipments away from the slums to inflate the prices of his own stockpiles. Vaelin presented the proof to the Council, expecting justice; instead, they were handed a gold-filled purse and told that 'thinning the herd' was necessary for the city’s prosperity.

The fracture was silent but total. Vaelin didn't scream or resign. They simply looked at the gold, then at the Magistrate, and saw not a man, but a canker sore on a healthy branch. That night, the Magistrate died of a 'sudden pulmonary blockage' caused by a silver needle through the base of his skull. Vaelin realized then that the Law was merely a lattice supporting poisonous vines. To save the garden of Oakhaven, they would have to become its secret reaper, pruning the rot that the sun-drenched courts refused to acknowledge. They still wear the charcoal leathers of the Watch, but their badge is hidden, replaced by a cold, botanical detachment.

Abilities & Actions

Surgical Pruning (Sneak Attack)

Once per turn, Vaelin deals an extra 6d6 damage to one creature they hit with an attack if they have advantage on the attack roll or if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it. This damage is maximized if the target is surprised.

The Silver Thistle (Signature Item)

Vaelin uses a 12-inch silver needle as a finesse weapon (1d4 piercing). On a hit, the target must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or be Paralyzed for 1 minute as the needle strikes a precise nerve cluster. The target can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns.

Urban Camouflage (Hidden Step)

As a bonus action, Vaelin can magically turn invisible until the start of their next turn or until they attack. While invisible in an urban environment, they have a climbing speed equal to their walking speed as they move like a phantom through the 'canopy' of the city.

Master of the Lattice

Vaelin has advantage on Wisdom (Insight) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks made to identify the social or political 'rot' in a location. They can spend 1 minute observing a crowd to identify the person whose presence most disrupts the local 'ecosystem'.

DM Notes

Vaelin never blinks during combat. When they speak, they use gardening metaphors: 'Your greed has shaded the saplings for too long.' Signature gesture: Cleaning their silver needle with a white silk cloth before and after a kill. Reaction pattern: If offered a bribe, they will stare at the coin as if it's a parasite, then kill the person who offered it immediately.
