Personality

Personality

She speaks with the pedantic, unhurried cadence of a librarian. She never raises her voice, finding that a whisper carries more weight when backed by an unbreakable wall.

Ideal

Stasis. A locked door is the only honest thing in a world of liars.

Bond

The Great Stone Bridge. It is her body, her temple, and her cage.

Flaw

She is physically incapable of allowing a 'pass'—even for those she might otherwise find useful.

Backstory

Karys was once the shining jewel of the Highbridge Watch, a sergeant whose abjuration wards were the city's pride. But while others saw the bridge as a path for commerce, Karys saw it as a structural liability plagued by the 'germ' of human movement. She realized that peace was merely a temporary lull in chaos; only stasis was eternal. To achieve a world that never wavered, she brokered a contract with a devil of the Iron City, trading the souls of her entire squad to anchor herself to the stone forever.

During the Great Midnight Riot, as her soldiers pleaded for the gate keys, Karys watched with a serene, terrifying smile as she fused the iron ring into a single lump of slag. She didn't let the rioters in, and she didn't let the guards out. She simply... stabilized the scene. Now, she remains the bridge’s permanent fixture. She is the 'No' at the end of every road, a living seal who believes that a world that cannot move is a world that cannot suffer. To cross her bridge is to invite her to delete your very momentum.

Abilities & Actions

The Betrayer's Aegis (Recharges on Long Rest)

Karys projects a 30-foot-wide, 10-foot-high hexagonal wall of force across the bridge. The shield flickers with the screaming, spectral faces of the guards she sacrificed. Any creature that touches the wall must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or be Frightened until the end of their next turn. The wall has 100 hit points and a damage threshold of 10.

Blue Sentry’s Pulse (3/Day)

As a bonus action, Karys slams the iron edges of the Blue Sentry’s Tome. A wave of blue electricity surges in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a DC 17 Strength saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 4d8 lightning damage and its speed is reduced to 0 until the start of Karys's next turn as she 'deletes' their momentum.

Bureaucratic Denial (Reaction)

When a creature Karys can see within 60 feet attempts to take an action, she can utter a word of absolute negation. The creature must succeed on a DC 17 Intelligence saving throw or lose that action, finding their muscles locked in a state of perfect, agonizing stillness.

DM Notes

Karys speaks to travelers as if they are unruly children or smudge marks on a clean floor. She doesn't initiate combat; she waits for someone to try and move past her. Her signature gesture is slowly rotating the slag-fused keys on her belt.

Sample Dialogue: 'Movement is a fever, traveler. I am the cure. You wish to cross? I'm afraid that request has been... denied. Permanently.'
