Personality

Personality

Speaks in measured, melodic baritones; he never raises his voice, as he finds shouting to be a confession of intellectual defeat. He has a habit of cleaning his silver rapier with a silk handkerchief while listening to others plead.

Ideal

Contract. Life is a series of binding agreements; those who break them deserve to be the ink on the next page.

Bond

The Silver Parchment. It is the only document in the world that can restore his standing and provide the leverage needed to dismantle his family's legacy.

Flaw

Varrick cannot tell a lie. While he can manipulate the truth to devastating effect, his refusal to utter a direct falsehood is a code he will never break, even if it costs him his life.

Backstory

Baron Varrick was once the most feared legal mind of the Azure Archipelago, a High Negotiator who could dismantle a trade blockade with a single three-clause sentence. He moved through the marble halls of the capital not like a titan of meat and bone, but like a draft of cold air—silent, precise, and impossible to pin down. His downfall was orchestrated by his own kin, who feared his growing control over the national treasury. They framed him for the theft of the 'Sovereign Ciphers,' turning his own meticulous records against him. Forced into exile, Varrick realized that 'justice' was merely a failure of imagination.

Now, Varrick operates from the shadows of high society as an information broker of terrifying repute. He haunts the sites of 'accidents' and carriage robberies, collecting the secrets others leave behind in their panic. He carries a small, rusted child's rattle—the only remnant of the family he lost in the purge—as a reminder that sentiment is the only leash he still allows himself. He seeks the Silver Parchment, a hidden ledger that holds the names of those who betrayed him, not to clear his name, but to own theirs.

Abilities & Actions

The Truth’s Cage (1/Day)

Varrick speaks a series of undeniable truths that confuse and bind his enemies. Each creature of his choice within 30 feet that can hear him must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be affected by the *Hold Person* spell (no concentration required) for 1 minute as their mind reels from the cold logic of his words. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns.

Trunk-Assisted Leverage

Varrick can use a bonus action to make a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check using his trunk to disarm a creature or plant an object on them. Additionally, he can use his trunk to hold his magnifying glass or a second light weapon, granting him advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks made to detect lies.

The Negotiator's Sting (Sneak Attack)

Once per turn, Varrick deals an extra 17 (5d6) damage when he hits a target with a weapon attack and has advantage on the attack roll, or if the target is within 5 feet of an ally. If Varrick has used his Insightful Fighting feature against the target, he does not need advantage to trigger this damage.

Meticulous Appraisal

Varrick can spend 1 minute inspecting an object or a crime scene. He automatically learns if the object is magical, its approximate value, and can perfectly recall one detail about the last person who held it (such as a scent, a lingering finger-print, or a scrap of fabric).

DM Notes

Varrick never initiates combat; he treats it as a 'breach of contract.' Sample dialogue: 'Your panic is loud, Captain. It drowns out the very reasonable terms I am offering. Put down the steel, and let us discuss the specific weight of your life.' He constantly adjusts his velvet doublet with his trunk. He reacts to threats with a polite, disappointed sigh.
